Living as a disciple of Jesus Christ finds momentum like a pendulum swinging from a journey inward to a journey outward. The journey inward has to do with hearing God’s Word resonating deeply in your own heart, sometimes comforting and affirming, sometimes disturbing and challenging, but always life-giving. The outward journey has to do with living out what you have heard in the relationships of community and in responsive service to God with God’s Spirit in the church and in the world. We make it easy at Abiding Harvest. Just participating starts you on these journeys. Here’s how.
DAILY DEVOTIONAL GUIDES* – Every week 5 daily devotionals are published that explore passages in God’s Word that will give you something spiritual to chew on all day long. This is the inward journey, building spiritual momentum into your week. Many Christians have “quiet times” that focus them spiritually for the challenges of the day. But often “quiet times” are isolated and lonely. Not here. You do them on your own, but the scriptural passages you study on your own become the same scriptures from which the next Sunday’s message evolves.
SUNDAY’S MESSAGES* – Imagine hearing a message every week on the very passages you have been contemplating personally - the pastor answering questions your own readings have surfaced, his message affirming and motivating you to keep venturing ahead with God. If you bring a friend with you, you’ll already have insights of your own to share and discuss. At Abiding Harvest we hope the message you hear Sunday mornings is an installment in an ongoing conversation, not the last word on the subject, and certainly more than an entertaining monologue. No doubt you’ll hear God’s word passionately proclaimed, but that is far from the end of the process as we see it. Our messages are fully integrated with the content of discussions in our weekly small groups. No homework. You’re ready!
HOMETEAM APPLICATION – HomeTeams are living-room sized gatherings of those who have heard the Word preached on Sunday mornings and through their own discussions take it for a “test drive.” After all, the hard part of most messages is not hearing it, but living it. Too often we churches leave the toughest part of hearing a sermon to individuals to pull off by themselves! No wonder so few messages ever get translated into real life. Hometeams collaborate on the next steps of application together and that usually makes those steps far easier and more likely. We are all fellow-strugglers. None of us are perfect. We are all ordinary people supporting one another in learning how to please God in real life places that often resist even life-giving adjustments in the routine; in our homes, in our offices, in our relationships. Everyone shares at their own pace. We don’t coerce or force our agendas on one another. No one is put on the spot. Anyone can find encouragement, clarification, hope, and a friend that cares enough to pray you through and who often shows up when you need them most. It’s here that a lot of us are discovering that being church is so much more what we’ve been looking for than just going to church. Click here to check out our HomeTeam roster for a group that meets at a time and place convenient for you. Feel free to call and visit with the leader before you go. You’ll be received like an old and good friend. Try several if you like until you decide upon the one best for you. NOTE: Most home teams are suspended for the summer months.
*Each Sunday worshippers receive a Message Notes handout. Many like to jot down things they find helpful as they listen to the message. On the reverse side of the Message Notes you’ll find the Daily Devotional Guide for the upcoming week. We also make these publications available here on our website.
